2020 Avignonesi - Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poggetto di Sopra (750ml)
Avignonesi traces its roots back to the sixteenth century, though the estate took its modern shape in 1974 when the Falvo family set out to modernize production in Montepulciano. In 2009 Belgian entrepreneur Virginie Saverys acquired the winery outright and reoriented it toward organic and biodynamic farming, eliminating herbicides and pesticides across the vineyards and earning organic certification in 2016. Today the estate spans well over a hundred hectares of Sangiovese in Montepulciano, farmed as dozens of distinct micro-parcels and vinified separately to preserve each site's individual voice.
Poggetto di Sopra comes from a single vineyard first planted in 1978, one of the oldest parcels on the property, where silt, limestone, and blue sodium clay soils shape a distinctly transparent style of Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. Rather than imposing a house style, the winemaking team favors careful observation over intervention, letting each vintage's character emerge on its own terms. The wine typically ages in large Slavonian oak casks alongside some French oak, allowing the fruit and mineral qualities of the site to remain the focus.
The 2020 offers dried rose and cedar shavings alongside wild strawberry and floral underbrush, with a mineral-forward palate where tart cranberry meets sour cherry and warm spice. The texture is lifted and finessed, finishing with a pleasantly chewy grip and a lingering tart blackberry note. Pair it with roasted game birds, herb-crusted lamb, or aged pecorino.
