2020 Perticaia - Montefalco Rosso DOC (750ml)
Perticaia takes its name from an old Umbrian word for plow, a nod to this stretch of countryside's shift from pastoral life to settled agriculture. Founded in 2000, the estate passed in 2018 to Flavio Becca, a Luxembourg-based entrepreneur originally from nearby Valtopina, who took over the winery along with its Castello di Gallano property to begin a new chapter rooted in tradition and quality. Today the estate's roughly fifteen hectares of vineyard include named parcels like Vigna delle Querce, bordered by centuries-old trees, and Vigna Attone, which runs alongside the stream of the same name, together with an olive grove that rounds out the property.
This Montefalco Rosso blends roughly 70% Sangiovese with Sagrantino and Colorino, hand harvested with careful bunch selection, Sangiovese and Colorino picked in mid-September and Sagrantino in early October. The grapes undergo a 48-hour cold soak before fermenting with naturally occurring yeasts, spending around eighteen days on the skins. The blend is then assembled and aged twelve months in a mix of steel and wood, followed by six months resting in bottle.
The wine shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections, and a layered nose of ripe cherry, plum, and blackberry alongside dried herbs, leather, and sweet spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity balancing notes of licorice and cocoa. It pairs well with roasted meats, game, or aged pecorino.
