2018 Perticaia - Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG (750ml)
The 2018 Perticaia Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG delivers the structured intensity and decades of cellar potential expected from Umbria’s flagship red, crafted entirely from hand-selected Sagrantino grapes cultivated at roughly 350 meters elevation.
The estate spans approximately 34 hectares and operates under the Becca family following their 2018 acquisition, balancing growth with meticulous traditional practices. Grapes are manually harvested into crates through September and early October, with careful vineyard-level sorting to preserve fruit integrity. Fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures accompanied by fifteen days of extended skin contact, extracting color, flavor compounds, and tannic foundation. The wine then matures for 30 to 36 months in French oak barrels before entering bottle rest, a method that smooths aggressive phenolics while retaining Sagrantino’s characteristic grip and depth.
Pour reveals an intense ruby body with garnet reflections, opening to a complex bouquet of ripe stone and dark berries layered with warm spice, dried herbs, and elegant tertiary notes. On the palate, it feels full-bodied and seamless, guided by velvety tannins and finishing with long, savory persistence that develops further with time. Decant for at least an hour to open tightly wound flavors, or lay down until 2030–2038 for peak integration. Serve alongside slow-roasted lamb shoulder, braised osso buco, mushroom risotto, or truffle-heavy preparations to complement the wine’s robust structure and earthy finish.
