2022 Catena - Malbec Mendoza (750ml)

Catena Malbec 2022 comes from Bodega Catena Zapata, a family winery founded in Mendoza, Argentina in 1902. Fourth-generation vintner Laura Catena now leads the estate alongside her father, Nicolás Catena Zapata, who is widely credited with elevating Argentine Malbec to world-class status by exploring the potential of high-altitude vineyards. Working with head winemaker Alejandro Vigil, the family continues to draw on decades of research into Mendoza's mountain terroirs to shape the character of their wines.

This bottling is a blend sourced from several of Catena's estate vineyards across different microclimates in Mendoza, an approach meant to capture complexity from varied soils and elevations. Grapes undergo a cold soak before fermentation to help draw out color and aroma, followed by a period of extended maceration to build structure. The wine is then aged for several months in a mix of French oak barrels, combining new and previously used wood to add depth without overwhelming the fruit.

The glass shows a deep violet color with purple highlights. Aromas of ripe red and dark fruit mingle with delicate violet and lavender notes, along with hints of vanilla and mocha. On the palate, flavors of blueberry and blackberry appear alongside touches of leather and spice, supported by well-integrated tannins and a bright, lasting finish. It pairs beautifully with grilled steak, lamb chops, or aged hard cheeses.
