Ryan Deovlet, whose surname traces back to his grandfather Dewey Diran Deovletian, an Armenian immigrant who fled the country in 1914, founded his namesake label after years spent learning the character of the Santa Rita Hills. He works primarily with three sites on opposite sides of the valley, including the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard, and is known for a hands-off approach that favors restrained oak and early picking dates over heavy extraction. His cellar partner, Grace Kegel, has worked alongside him since 2013, bringing experience from harvests in New Zealand and South Africa.

Sanford & Benedict was planted in 1971 by Richard Sanford, one of the first growers to recognize the potential of the Santa Rita Hills, a rare east-west running coastal range fully exposed to Pacific fog and wind. The site's cool nights and long hanging time give the fruit unusual concentration alongside bright natural acidity. Deovlet's approach favors gentle handling in the cellar, with judicious use of new oak that lets the vineyard's character lead rather than winemaking technique.

The wine offers white peach, citrus, and floral aromatics lifted by subtle mineral and sea spray notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky, with bright acidity carrying lemon, green apple, and stone fruit through a long, precise finish. It pairs well with grilled halibut, roast chicken, or a lemon-forward pasta.

95 Points
"Echoing the stellar Pinot Noir bottling, the 2022 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard offers a little bit of everything in an understated yet complete package. The nose is a radiant, focused combination of yellow fruits, pastry dough, sea salt and citrus blossoms. The palate is just rich enough while retaining admirable energy and focus, with superb delineation and tension throughout. The finish is stony and elegant, slowly building richness with time in the glass but never losing sight of its vibrant clarity."
