2022 Samuel Louis Smith Syrah from Coastview Vineyard in the Gabilan Mountains embodies the label’s cool-climate, elegant style. Coastview sits at roughly 2,300 feet, an organically farmed site planted in 1999 on decomposed granite and limestone soils, high above the coastal fog line. That elevation yields a cool, slow-growing season that finishes with a brighter, more buoyant ripeness at harvest.

Winemaking embraces restraint: native yeast fermentation through a pied de cuve starter, a hands-off approach that lets the granite-driven minerality and tension carry through to the finished wine.

Tasting notes

This Syrah presents black fruit and violet aromas layered with cracked pepper, savory herbs, and a touch of game, all lifted by the vineyard's signature freshness and lively acidity. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide structure without heaviness.

Pairings

  • Grilled quail
  • A wild mushroom tart
  • Aged Comté

"The 2022 Syrah Coastview Vineyard from a site in the Gabilan Mountains, is gorgeous. It offers a rush of blue/purplish fruit intermingled with graphite, crushed rocks, lavender, incense and cloves. Veins of supporting tannin pull it all together effortlessly. This dark, dense Syrah has a ton to offer.
