2023 Gurashvili - Rkatsiteli Qvevri (750ml)
This amber wine comes from the microzone of Tibaani, part of Kakheti's Alazani Valley, an area known for rich soils and sun-drenched slopes ideal for ripening Rkatsiteli. Winemaker Zviad Gurashvili works artisanally, without additives, crafting natural wines with pronounced terroir character.
Rkatsiteli is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the world and is believed to have originated in Kakheti itself, where it remains deeply woven into Georgian culture and everyday life. In keeping with the traditional Kakheti method, this wine is fermented and aged in qvevri, the underground clay vessels that allow extended skin contact and give the wine its structure and depth.
The result is a deep amber wine with a coppery shine. On the nose, expect dried apricot, tea, orange peel, and candied pear, while the palate is powerful and structured, with soft but present tannins, spicy bitters, and a long, dry finish. Full-bodied and well-integrated in its tannins, this style of Rkatsiteli carries excellent aging potential and can continue developing complexity in the bottle.
This is a textbook example of classic Kakheti qvevri wine, best suited to rich, spicy dishes such as roasted meats, aged cheeses, or Georgian khinkali and khachapuri.
