2024 Cakebread - Chardonnay Napa Valley (750ml)
2024 Cakebread Chardonnay — Napa Valley (750ml)
Cakebread Cellars has carried forward a family-driven commitment to expressive Chardonnay since 1973. This 2024 release continues that legacy, crafted from fruit sourced predominantly from the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley. The cool, windswept climate here preserves bright acidity while letting ripe fruit flavors shine, and the wine benefits from Cakebread’s regenerative farming practices across Napa Valley, Carneros, and Anderson Valley—featuring cover crops and grazing sheep in place of synthetic inputs. The estate’s dedication to sustainability is reflected in its Napa Green certification and careful stewardship of soils, including the Haire loam profile that helps moderate vine vigor for concentrated yields.
The winemaking approach emphasizes gentle handling and texture. Grapes are hand-harvested at night in small lots, then pressed directly into tank as whole clusters before the juice is transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine rests nine months on the lees with intermittent stirring, building texture and complexity while maintaining a bright, food-friendly core.
Tasting notes
- Aromas: ripe golden apple, white peach, with a hint of light oak.
- Palate: apple and pear flavors framed by fresh acidity; subtle mineral carry and a touch of lemon toward the finish.
- Finish: clean and precise, lingering with fruit and mineral notes that invite another sip.
Terroir, aging, and style
The Carneros origin contributes cool-climate balance—ripe fruit character married to bright acidity. Soils dominated by Haire loam (a light clay) naturally regulate vine vigor, helping to concentrate flavor without sacrificing freshness. Fermented in French oak and aged on the lees for nine months, the wine gains textural depth and a nuanced, subtle toasty tone that complements the fruit-driven profile without overpowering it.
