Achleiten is one of Austria’s greatest vineyards, a dramatic run of steep stone terraces rising from the Danube just outside Weissenkirchen. There’s barely any topsoil here, just a complex patchwork of gneiss and amphibolite, which is exactly what gives Achleiten Riesling its famous signature of flint, smoke and minerals. In the hands of Toni Bodenstein, the geologist who leads Prager, it’s a benchmark Wachau Riesling.

The 2025 is wildly aromatic, with ripe stone fruit and orchard fruit on the nose, then the classic Achleiten flintiness on a finely mineral palate that rolls into a long, precise finish. Fermented in stainless steel for pure, crystalline expression, it’s built to age but already a thrill. Pair with trout, scallops, Thai dishes or pork with apples.

looking west, east and south, from vines planted in the 1950s and
1990s. Gorgeous white peach seems steeped in lime and grapefruit
zest. That absolute citrus slenderness carries onto the palate, where it
drills down into rock, linear, uncompromising, svelte and very stony.
This is austere now but will be a marvel in the future, with alluring
purity and strait-laced poise."
