Aperol Aperitivo Aperitif 750ml
Aperol was created in Padua in 1919 by brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri, who took over their father Giuseppe's liqueur company and spent seven years refining the formula before unveiling it at the Padua International Fair. The goal was a lighter, less bitter alternative to the amari already popular in Italy at the time, aimed at stimulating the appetite before a meal rather than overwhelming the palate. The liqueur stayed largely a regional favorite in the Veneto until well after World War II. Gruppo Campari acquired the brand in 2003 and built it into an international name, largely on the strength of the Aperol Spritz.
The recipe remains proprietary, but the company has confirmed its foundation of sweet and bitter oranges, gentian root, rhubarb, and cinchona bark, along with a broader mix of herbs and roots sourced mainly from Piedmont. These botanicals are macerated in neutral alcohol, then blended with water and sugar to reach a finished strength of 11 percent alcohol by volume. Unlike many Italian bitters, Aperol undergoes no aging and is bottled shortly after blending.
The color is a bright, glowing orange, distinctly lighter than Campari's deep red. On the nose, citrus peel comes through first, followed by soft herbal and slightly bitter undertones. The palate is bittersweet and approachable, with orange rind and a touch of gentle bitterness on the finish rather than the assertive bite found in stronger aperitivos.
