Founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer who settled in the town of Cognac after his military service, Maison Hennessy has grown into the largest cognac house in the world, now guided by eight generations of family master blenders. The VSOP designation itself traces back to a request from the future King George IV of England in 1817, who asked for a "very superior old pale" cognac, a phrase that went on to define an entire category of aged brandy.

Hennessy VSOP is crafted from Ugni Blanc grapes grown across the four principal crus of the Cognac region, harvested and pressed without mechanical presses to avoid bitterness. Each year the house's tasting committee samples dozens of eaux-de-vie sourced from different growers and distillation runs, all double distilled in copper pot stills, before blending them together and aging the result in French oak for a minimum of four years.

The cognac pours a warm amber with copper highlights and opens with apricot and fresh grape aromas. On the palate, soft spice notes of vanilla, clove, and cinnamon meet mellow toasted oak, finishing long and smooth with a balance of strength and warmth that suits sipping neat, on ice, or in a classic Sidecar.
