John Jameson founded his Dublin distillery in 1780, and the company that carries his name eventually became part of Irish Distillers, formed in 1966 through the merger of Jameson, Powers, and the Cork Distilleries Company. Black Barrel debuted in New York City in 2011, originally under the name Select Reserve, as a bolder sibling to the standard Jameson bottling. Master blender Billy Leighton developed it to showcase a sweeter, rounder profile, and it has since become a fixture in the modern Jameson lineup, still produced at the company's Midleton Distillery in County Cork.

Black Barrel is a blend of small-batch grain whiskey, distilled just once a year, and a higher proportion of single pot still whiskey made from malted and unmalted barley, both triple distilled in copper pot stills. What sets it apart from the standard release is an added step in which the ex-bourbon barrels used for maturation are given a second, deeper charring, a traditional cooper's technique that draws out extra caramelized wood sugars. A portion of sherry-cask-aged pot still whiskey and a touch of virgin oak whiskey round out the blend before bottling, giving Black Barrel more depth than Jameson's entry-level expression.

The nose opens with butterscotch, creamy toffee, and fudge, with a faint tropical note of coconut or pineapple in the background. On the palate, warm vanilla and spice meet toasted wood and a nutty richness, finishing long with dark chocolate and caramelized sugar. That extra sweetness and structure make it a natural fit for an Old Fashioned, where the double-char character reduces the need for added sugar, and it also holds its own in an Irish coffee.

"Triple distilled, flame charred, for a rich smooth taste.

Charring is an age-old method for invigorating barrels to intensify the taste. Jameson Black Barrel is our tribute to our coopers, who painstakingly give their bourbon barrels an additional charring to reveal their untold richness and complexity. The select double charred barrels produce a whiskey with even richer flavor and intense smoothness.

NoseTime spent maturing in these barrels leads to intensified aromas of butterscotch, fudge and creamy toffee.

TasteNutty notes are in abundance alongside the smooth sweetness of spice and vanilla.

FinishEnjoy the richness and intensity of toasted wood and vanilla.
