Macallan 12 yr Double Cask Whiskey 750ml
The Macallan has distilled whisky in Speyside since 1824, when it became one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be granted a legal license. The brand built its reputation on meticulous cask management, and in 2019 opened a striking new distillery designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, built into the surrounding landscape beneath a grass-covered roof and engineered to replicate the character of the original spirit at a much larger scale. The Double Cask expression was introduced to fill the space between Macallan's more intense, fully European oak Sherry Oak range and its lighter, non-age-statement bottlings.
Distilled from 100% malted barley, the whisky is matured for a minimum of 12 years in a marriage of American and European oak casks, both of which are seasoned with sherry at bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, before use. The American oak lends brighter citrus and vanilla notes, while the European oak contributes darker fruit and warm spice, and the finished whisky is bottled at 43% ABV.
The nose offers a classic Macallan profile of toffee, fudge, and vanilla, with candied lemon citrus adding brightness. On the palate, sweetness from the American oak, honey, maple, and cream, plays against the spicier tannins of the European oak, bringing candied ginger, raisin, and a touch of black pepper. The finish is smooth and moderately long. It works especially well in whisky-forward cocktails like an Old Fashioned.
