NV Fonseca - Porto Siroco White Port

Fonseca traces its origins to 1815, when João dos Santos Fonseca began trading Port along the Douro, with the Guimaraens family soon taking control and steering the house ever since. Now part of the Fladgate Partnership, the firm draws grapes from three quintas in the Cima Corgo, though its white Port fruit comes from the region's cooler, higher-altitude vineyards, better suited to the delicate varieties this style requires. Siroco was first introduced in the 1950s, taking its name from the warm wind that sweeps north from the Mediterranean across North Africa.

Siroco is a blend of classic white Port varieties, led by Malvasia Fina alongside smaller portions of Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato, and Arinto. To reach its crisp, dry character, the wine is allowed a longer fermentation than sweeter Port styles before fortification halts the process, preserving natural acidity rather than residual sugar. It is then aged in small oak vats, a step that rounds out its texture and layers in a delicate nuttiness alongside its bright fruit.

The color is pale straw with golden highlights, and the nose offers ripe orchard fruit, a touch of honeyed wood, and light toasted almond. On the palate it is full yet refreshingly dry, with a long, clean finish and lively acidity. Serve it chilled as an aperitif, on its own or topped with tonic water, alongside salted almonds or briny olives.
