Fonseca has been producing Port since 1822, when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens took control of the Fonseca and Monteiro Company and insisted the family name be kept as the brand. Six generations of Guimaraens have overseen the house since, with current head winemaker David Guimaraens continuing a lineage that traces back through his father and great-grandfather. Fonseca draws its grapes from three estates in the Douro, Cruzeiro, Panascal, and Santo António, and today operates as part of The Fladgate Partnership alongside Taylor Fladgate and Croft. The house remains best known for the richness and generosity of its house style across both vintage and aged tawny Ports.

Fonseca ages its tawny stocks upriver in the Douro Valley rather than near the mouth of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the greater heat and humidity there give the wine a distinctive baked, butterscotch-like richness as it slowly oxidizes in wood. Each year the casks lose roughly three percent of their volume to evaporation, concentrating the wine further. This bottling is a blend of tawnies averaging twenty years of cask age, selected for balance and depth of character.

The wine shows a deep amber color with russet highlights, and its bouquet layers ripe plummy fruit with cinnamon, butterscotch, and subtle oak. The palate is full and voluminous, with a velvety texture that carries into a long, elegant finish. Serve it with walnuts, dried apricots, or a crème brûlée.

92 Points
"The NV 20 Year Old Tawny was bottled with a bar top cork in 2013. It comes in at 111.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. A big mouthful, this is a 20 that first coats the palate and then ends with silky texture and concentrated flavor. Very graceful, it is not as impressive in terms of mid-palate density, but it is more than respectable. It shows fine complexity, appropriate to its age category. The finish seals the deal, more lingering and gripping than I expected from the first taste. It is another delicious Tawny from the Taylor Fladgate group this issue, so dig in."
