Hanson of Sonoma is a family-owned distillery founded by brothers Chris and Brandon Hanson, who set out to build an organic, grape-based vodka business from the ground up in Sonoma County, California. The distillery is now run hands-on by the wider Hanson family, including siblings Darren and Alanna alongside parents Scott and Judy, and has earned recognition for its commitment to sustainable, small-batch production. Mandarin is one of several fruit-infused expressions in the Hanson lineup, sitting alongside varieties like Meyer Lemon and Cucumber, each built around the same organic grape foundation the brand was founded on.

Hanson starts with organic grapes rather than grain, distilled through a fifty-plate still to produce a clean, pure base spirit. For the Mandarin expression, three varieties of certified organic mandarins are hand peeled, and those peels undergo a long maceration in the distillery's Original Vodka to draw out maximum citrus flavor. The finished spirit is filtered seven times and remains non-GMO and gluten free, consistent with the rest of the Hanson range.

The nose leads with bright, bold mandarin citrus, avoiding the confectionary or artificial quality found in some flavored vodkas. On the palate, the mandarin gives way to notes of passionfruit, adding depth beyond straightforward citrus. The finish closes with a clean essence of lemon, leaving a fresh, true-to-fruit impression that carries especially well when mixed with ice and soda water.
