Airfield Estates Merlot 2021 — Yakima Valley, Washington

From Airfield Estates, a fourth-generation family farm rooted in the Yakima Valley and tracing back to 1907, this 750ml Merlot is estate grown in Washington’s oldest AVA. The vineyard sits on silt loam soils layered over fractured basalt at the foot of the Rattlesnake Mountains. The valley’s high desert climate features warm days and cool nights, allowing fruit to fully ripen while preserving natural acidity.

The 2021 vintage, one of Washington’s warmest on record, yielded concentrated, structured fruit built for both early drinking and cellaring. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with dark fruit aromas of black cherry, cassis, and sweet plum layered with espresso and toffee notes. Smooth, supple tannins carry flavors of blackberry jam, vanilla, and toasted oak through a long finish.

Tasting notes

  • Aromas: black cherry, cassis, sweet plum, espresso, toffee
  • Palate: blackberry jam, vanilla, toasted oak
  • Finish: long and refined

Grapes and origin

Grapes are entirely estate sourced, reflecting the Miller family philosophy that fine wine begins in the vineyard.

Food pairings

Pairs nicely with grilled steak, roasted lamb, or aged cheddar.
