The Balvenie distillery sits in Dufftown, in Scotland's Speyside region, where Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE has overseen whisky production for more than five decades. Founded within the William Grant & Sons family alongside sister distillery Glenfiddich, Balvenie remains distinctive for growing its own barley, operating traditional floor maltings, and employing an in-house coppersmith and cooperage, practices few distilleries still maintain today. That hands-on, small-batch approach carries through Stewart's ongoing series of cask-finished expressions, of which this release marks a notable first.

This 16-year-old single malt spent its initial maturation in American oak casks before finishing for several months in French oak barrels that previously held Pineau des Charentes, a fortified aperitif from western France made by adding Cognac eau-de-vie to unfermented grape juice. The pairing was reportedly inspired by Balvenie's US brand ambassador after a family trip to the Charente region, and it represents the distillery's first venture into French oak finishing. The whisky is bottled at 47.6% ABV.

The result is a golden-hued malt with fragrant citrus and vanilla on the nose. The palate turns creamy and complex, layering brown sugar, chocolate, and golden raisins beneath a blanket of vanilla and a dusting of savory spice, closing on a finish of moderate length.
