Basil Hayden's Dark Rye Whiskey 750ml
Basil Hayden traces its lineage to Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., a Kentucky whiskey maker in the 1840s known for crafting a distinctively high-rye recipe. That legacy carried through his descendant Raymond B. Hayden, who launched Old Grand-Dad in 1882, a brand still produced today by Jim Beam's parent company, Beam Suntory. In 1992, Beam introduced Basil Hayden's as a small batch tribute to that history, and the lineup has since expanded to include several permanent extensions, with Dark Rye arriving in 2017 as the brand's second such release.
Dark Rye is a blend built from Kentucky straight rye distilled at Beam's Clermont facility, Canadian rye sourced from Alberta Distillers, and a measure of California port wine added directly into the mix rather than used as a barrel finish. This approach gives blenders precise control over fruit character and ensures consistency from batch to batch, distinguishing it from competitors that rely on port cask finishing. The finished product is classified as a whiskey specialty rather than a straight rye, reflecting the wine's role in the final blend, and it is bottled at a gentle 80 proof.
The nose offers strawberry jam and dark cherry over seasoned oak, with a thread of rye spice and baked fruit pastry underneath. On the palate, dried berries and caramel arrive first, giving way to rye spice, baked apple, and a touch of oak in the middle. The finish is medium in length, warm and fruit-driven throughout.
