Bulleit traces its roots to Augustus Bulleit, a Kentucky bourbon maker in the 1830s, though the modern brand was revived by his descendant Tom Bulleit, who began distilling in 1987. The bourbon reached retail shelves in 1995, and the company was acquired by Diageo in the late 1990s, growing into one of the most recognizable names in American whiskey. Building on that momentum, Bulleit introduced its rye whiskey in March 2011, quickly establishing itself as a category leader and helping spark renewed interest in rye during the following decade.

Bulleit Rye is distilled by MGP Ingredients in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, under a proprietary specification developed for the brand, using a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley, unusually high even by rye whiskey standards. The rye grain is sourced from Germany, Sweden, Canada, and the United States, and fermentation relies on a distinct house yeast strain. The whiskey matures in new charred white oak barrels for a minimum of four years, with older stock sometimes blended in, and Bulleit oversees maturation itself at both MGP's facility and its own warehouses.

The nose leans biscuity and buttery, with allspice, dried tropical fruit, and a hint of tobacco underneath. On the palate, buttery rye grain gives way to sage, maple, and a forceful black pepper bite that carries through a spicy, cinnamon-tinged finish. Its high rye content makes it a favorite for cocktails that call for a spirit with real backbone, from an Old Fashioned to a Sazerac.

"Has there ever been a moment when you've been sipping Bulleit Bourbon and wanted it to have even more rye? Well you're in luck, they now have their own Rye whiskey! Bulleit Rye is made with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley and is produced in small batches. An absolutely stunning rye.

Nose: Big heaps of cherries and vanilla, with subtle notes of leather and tobacco.

Palate: Rather hot at first, the spices coming to the forefront. This is followed by peaches, more cherries and a little bit of orange zest.

Finish: A smoky finish, carried by cinnamon, allspice and a hint of sweeties.

Overall: The Bulleit distillery sure know their way around a rye whiskey.
