Bushmills Black Bush Irish Whiskey 750ml

The Old Bushmills Distillery in County Antrim traces its license back to 1608, making it one of the oldest working distilleries in the world, though its early years were shaped by a succession of owners starting with the adventurer Thomas Phillips and later Hugh Anderson, who gave the distillery its name in 1784. Ownership has continued to change over the centuries, moving through Irish Distillers, Pernod Ricard, and Diageo before landing with its current parent, Jose Cuervo, in 2014. Through all of that, Bushmills has held onto a house style that sets it apart from whiskeys produced further south, favoring a heavier, malt-forward character even as it follows the traditional Irish triple distillation process.

Black Bush is built from an unusually high proportion of malted barley, blended with a smaller portion of grain whiskey, a recipe that gives it more body than most triple-distilled Irish whiskeys. The whiskey matures first in ex-bourbon casks before finishing in former Oloroso sherry butts, a combination that layers dried fruit and nutty richness onto the underlying malt. While Bushmills does not publish an official age statement for Black Bush, most of the whiskey in the blend is understood to rest for around seven to eight years before bottling at 40% ABV.

The nose opens with raisins, orange peel, and warm barley, settling into a palate of dried fig, caramel, toasted nuts, and a touch of dark chocolate, all carried on a notably full, oily mouthfeel. The finish is soft and lingering, closing on baking spice and a faint bitterness that keeps the sweetness in check. That depth of flavor holds its own in a whiskey sour or a Manhattan built with sweet vermouth, and it also makes a satisfying base for a hot toddy.
