The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 by George Smith, who became the first distiller in Speyside to obtain a legal license under the newly passed Excise Act, at a time when illicit stills were the norm throughout the region. That pioneering spirit gave rise to a whisky style that would come to define Speyside itself: light, fruity, and elegant. Now owned by Pernod Ricard's Chivas Brothers, the distillery draws its water from a source known as Josie's Well and continues to rely on stills whose specific height and width shape the brand's signature character.

This 12-year-old expression is matured in a combination of traditional American oak and European oak casks, a process the distillery calls double oak maturation. The American oak casks impart much of the whisky's smoothness and vanilla sweetness, while the European oak adds a layer of spice and depth. Fermentation and mashing rely on the same mineral-rich water drawn from Josie's Well, a consistent thread across Glenlivet's range. The whisky carries no chill filtration claims but is presented at standard strength for the core lineup.

Aromas of ripe pear, citrus zest, and soft florals lead into a palate built around apple, honey, and creamy vanilla, rounded out by a gentle touch of oak spice. The finish is long, crisp, and lightly warming, reflecting the classic Speyside profile the distillery helped establish.
