Hudson Whiskey traces back to 2003, when Ralph Erenzo and his partner Brian Lee converted an old gristmill in New York's Hudson Valley into Tuthilltown Spirits, the first legal distillery in the state since Prohibition. Do The Rye Thing, named in tribute to Spike Lee's film "Do the Right Thing," became the flagship expression to emerge from that revival, marking New York's first straight rye whiskey in nearly a century. The brand is now owned by William Grant & Sons, though it continues to source its grain from local New York farms and produce every bottle at the original Hudson Valley site.

This rye is distilled from a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley, with all the grain grown on farms within New York State, meeting the standards required for Empire Rye certification. The whiskey ages a minimum of three years in charred American oak barrels before bottling at 92 proof. That regional grain sourcing and small-batch, double-distilled production set it apart from most other high-rye whiskeys on the market, which typically rely on Midwest-grown grain.

The nose brings baking spice, dill, and a hint of lemon zest alongside honey and light oak. On the palate, tart citrus and clove meet cinnamon, with mint and honey rounding out the background. The finish runs long, closing on gentle spice and a bright, citrusy tartness.
