Michter's 10yr Single Barrel Rye Whiskey 750ml
Michter's traces its origins to 1753 in Pennsylvania, where the operation, first known as Shenk's and later Bomberger's, is regarded as America's earliest whiskey company. The brand went through several names and owners over the centuries, becoming a top-selling whiskey through the 1970s and 1980s before going bankrupt in 1989. New ownership revived Michter's in the 1990s, and in 2019 the company opened its own Kentucky distillery inside the historic Fort Nelson building in downtown Louisville after an eight-year restoration, giving the brand its first true production home in decades.
This single barrel rye ages a full decade before bottling, a rarity for the category given how few rye whiskeys reach that maturity without becoming overly aggressive. Michter's has stated that lower barrel entry proof is central to its process, allowing the whiskey to develop richness and depth without excessive alcohol dominating the flavor. Each barrel is individually selected by the distillery's team, led by Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson, resulting in a whiskey known for balance rather than raw spice intensity.
The nose offers vanilla, toffee, and toasted almond layered with cinnamon and a touch of orange citrus. On the palate, dried orchard fruit and baking spice unfold into candied cherry and butterscotch, with a rich, almost syrupy texture. The finish is long and warm, closing on toasted oak and a whisper of mint.
