Michter's traces its lineage to 1753 in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, where John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, founded the distillery that would eventually carry the Michter's name. The brand survived Prohibition only to shut down again in 1989, before Joseph Magliocco and Richard Newman revived it in the 1990s by acquiring the abandoned trademark. In 2019, Michter's opened its own distillery inside Louisville's historic Fort Nelson building, giving the reborn brand a true production home after decades of operating as a bottler.

US*1 Single Barrel Rye is built on a mash bill believed to sit around 53 percent rye, 33 percent corn, and 14 percent malted barley, a recipe similar in structure to other Kentucky-style ryes that lean on corn for added sweetness. The rye enters the barrel at a notably low 103 proof, a hallmark of the Michter's process thought to encourage deeper interaction between spirit and wood. Each bottle comes from a single barrel, aged a minimum of four years in toasted and charred new oak within heat-cycled warehouses, then bottled at a gentle 84.8 proof.

The nose brings citrus and vanilla with a touch of butterscotch and coconut, while the palate turns toward brown sugar, caramel, and soft black pepper. The finish is medium in length, closing on lingering rye spice, oak, and a whisper of mint.

NoseFresh-cut grass is the first thing to jump up out of the glass. Some dill follows, and that faint bubblegum note is the last thing to arrive. No heat to speak of, which is not surprising given the proof.

PalateThis pour touches down incredibly softly, with dill and mint on the front of the palate and a black pepper note at the back of the palate that builds all the way into the finish.

FinishThe finish drops of pretty quickly, with a touch of black pepper and oak, and the faintest return of the grassy rye note."
