Old Overholt is widely regarded as America's oldest continually maintained whiskey brand, founded in 1810 by Abraham Overholt in West Overton, Pennsylvania. It survived Prohibition largely intact, and by 1960 stood as the only nationally distributed straight rye whiskey left on the American market, a testament to its resilience through decades when rye whiskey fell sharply out of favor. In 1987, James B. Beam Distilling Company acquired the brand and relocated production to Kentucky, where it remains today under the ownership of Beam Suntory.

Following the move south, the mash bill shifted from the region's traditional Pennsylvania-style recipe to Beam's low-rye formula, believed to sit around the legal minimum of 51 percent rye alongside corn and malted barley, the same grain bill behind Jim Beam Rye and Knob Creek Rye. A 2020 reformulation marked a notable step forward for the brand, raising the proof from 80 to 86, adding a four-year age statement, and switching to non-chill filtration to preserve more of the whiskey's natural character. The exact grain ratios remain undisclosed, as is standard practice for Beam's rye whiskeys.

The nose offers graham cracker, caramel, and vanilla frosting layered over a citrusy orange base, unusually expressive for a whiskey at this proof. FINISHThe same flavors that are present in the palate ramp up a notch on the finish, but quickly fade, barely leaving a trace they were even there. For a brief moment these flavors show some hope before they quickly evaporate. It's a shame since that moment isn't all that bad."
