Sagamore Spirit was founded in Baltimore in 2017 by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank and his partner Bill McDermond, both driven by a mission to resurrect a whiskey tradition that had nearly disappeared from history. Before Prohibition, Maryland rye was celebrated as a smoother, creamier counterpoint to Pennsylvania's spicier style, so distinct that bartenders once called for it by name. Sagamore set out to revive that regional identity, and its efforts culminated in September 2025 with the release of this 10-Year-Old Straight Rye, the distillery's oldest expression to date and part of its ongoing Reserve Series, which spotlights standout barrel finishes and extended-age releases.

This whiskey ages a full decade in new charred American white oak barrels before being blended and bottled at 110.8 proof. Sagamore has not disclosed the exact composition, but the blend is believed to combine a high-rye component in the neighborhood of 95 percent rye with a softer, more traditional Maryland-style mash carrying additional corn and malted barley. That pairing lets the whiskey hold onto real spice intensity while gaining the roundness that only extended time in oak can provide.

The nose brings peach crumble, roasted nuts, and molasses cookie, with soft floral and citrus notes layered underneath. On the palate, crème brûlée and floral honey unfold into dark chocolate, toffee, and a rush of cracked pepper. The finish runs long and warming, closing with lingering white pepper and a gentle sweetness.
