WhistlePig launched from a farm in Shoreham, Vermont in 2010, built around a simple idea that had largely fallen out of practice in American whiskey: rye whiskey made entirely from rye grain rather than the legal minimum of 51 percent. Master distiller Dave Pickerell, previously known for his work at Maker's Mark, sourced fully mature 100% rye whisky from Alberta Distillers in Canada to create the brand's original flagship bottling. That whisky, produced using a proprietary enzyme process to ferment straight rye grain, became the foundation on which WhistlePig built its reputation as one of the category's most distinctive producers.

This expression is aged a full ten years in oak before bottling at 100 proof, giving it far more time in barrel than most rye whiskeys on the market. The all-rye mash bill pushes the flavor profile further from bourbon-adjacent ryes and closer to something with real botanical intensity, a character reviewers often compare to high-rye MGP expressions but with a distinctly different fruit-forward signature shaped by its Canadian origins and Vermont finishing. That decade of maturation softens the grain's natural sharpness while layering in deeper wood influence.

The nose opens with honey, vanilla, and warm baking spice, moving into dried orchard fruit and a classic peppery rye edge. On the palate, caramel and citrus meet dark chocolate and a whisper of mint, while the finish runs long, creamy, and warming, an unusual texture for a rye of this proof.
