Yellow Spot belongs to the historic Spot range created by Mitchell & Son, the Dublin wine merchant founded in 1805 that once marked its bonded casks with dabs of colored paint to track their age. The original Yellow Spot was sold through the mid-20th century before disappearing from shelves, and it stayed dormant for decades until Mitchell & Son combed through old company records to recreate the recipe. Working with Irish Distillers at the Midleton Distillery, the brand relaunched Yellow Spot in 2012, reviving a style that had all but vanished from modern Irish whiskey production.

Yellow Spot is a single pot still whiskey made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, distilled three times in traditional copper pot stills at Midleton. What sets it apart is its maturation: the spirit spends a full twelve years split across American bourbon barrels, Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, and, most unusually, Spanish Malaga wine casks. Malaga, a sweet fortified wine made from Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes, is rarely used for whiskey maturation, and its inclusion here gives Yellow Spot a distinct place among Irish pot still expressions.

The nose brings freshly cut hay and cracked black pepper alongside nutmeg, clove, and green tea, with the Malaga casks contributing honeyed peach and a floral sweetness. On the palate, honey and warm pot still spice meet notes of fresh coffee, milk chocolate, and red apple, all wrapped in a creamy, full-bodied texture. The finish is long and layered, closing on dried red grape and dry barley. That fruit-forward sweetness works nicely in a whiskey sour, or try it in a sparkling wine cocktail to echo the Malaga influence.
