2023 Chateau Lagrave Martillac BLANC - Pessac (750ml)

Château Latour-Martillac has been in the hands of the Kressmann family for generations, its name tied to a medieval tower once connected to the ancestors of the philosopher Montesquieu. Classified a Cru Classé de Graves in 1953 for both its red and white wines, the estate sits in the commune of Martillac within Pessac-Léognan, one of Bordeaux's most storied addresses for dry whites. Brothers Tristan and Loïc Kressmann direct the property today, and it was under their stewardship in the late 1980s that Lagrave-Martillac was introduced as the estate's second wine.

Lagrave-Martillac Blanc draws on a careful selection of young-vine parcels, blended in equal parts from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The vines grow in the gravel soils typical of Graves, layered with pockets of sand and clay that drain well and suit the region's temperate, oceanic climate. Each parcel is fermented separately in barrel, then the wine rests on its lees in French oak for seven months, a process that mirrors the estate's approach to its flagship white while keeping this cuvée fresh and approachable.

The wine pours pale yellow with green glints, opening to aromas of white flowers and grapefruit. The palate is soft on entry, building to a fine, full middle with notes of peach and exotic fruit, then finishing with a zesty touch of lemon and real mineral drive. Serve it with grilled sea bream, chilled prawns, or a plate of fresh chèvre.
