Maison Trimbach has led Alsace winemaking since 1626, with the family now in its twelfth and thirteenth generations under the guidance of brothers Pierre and Jean Trimbach. The estate owns a third of the Grand Cru vineyards in the region and has built its reputation on a distinctly purist style, producing wines the family describes as structured, elegant, and built for long aging, with bottles held in the cellar for years before release to ensure they arrive ready to drink yet capable of developing further.

Sélection de Grains Nobles is released only in exceptional vintages, and 2001 was one of just a handful of years, alongside 1989, 1990, 1994, and 2000, judged worthy of the designation. The grapes come from the Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauvillé and forty-year-old vines in Hunawihr's Muelforst vineyard, planted on well-drained, south-facing clay and limestone soils. A long growing season allowed noble rot to develop naturally on the fruit, concentrating sugars before hand-harvesting at yields as low as eighteen hectoliters per hectare, followed by slow fermentation that stops on its own to preserve the wine's natural sweetness.

The nose combines seared pineapple, mango, orange marmalade, peach, and apricot with hints of clove and caraway seed. The palate is rich and moderately viscous, carrying the fruit and spice through with a balancing thread of acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. It makes a striking match for foie gras, rich cream sauces, or firm, well-aged cheeses.

93 Points
"Pale golden-yellow color. Fresh, nuanced nose combines seared pineapple, mango, orange marmalade, peach, apricot, clove and caraway seed. Decidedly richer and more intense than the VT, with lovely purity of fruits and spices. Compellingly pliant, moderately viscous wine, but not at all heavy. Exhilarating noble rot here gives this wine terrific juiciness. Finishes with endless spice character"
