2023 La Colombera - Colli Tortonesi DOC Barbera Vegia Rampana (750ml)
Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel rather than oak, the 2023 La Colombera Colli Tortonesi “Vegia Rampana” delivers structured Barbera complexity driven by a 25-hectare southern Piedmont estate where clay-heavy soils intersect with limestone veins. Skipping barrel contact preserves the vintage’s bright acidity and primary fruit profile, allowing a firm yet finely woven tannic matrix to form naturally over its extended tank maturation.
The wine pours a clear ruby with distinct violet edges, immediately revealing concentrated marasca cherry, ripe plum, and sour cherry liqueur aromatics that deepen into dried stone fruit and forest floor notes. On the palate, a supple midsection bridges to a warm, expansive finish anchored by crisp acidity and dense, polished tannins. Pungent spice layers of pink pepper, nutmeg, and clove emerge as the glass opens, adding savory depth without masking the terroir expression. Although currently youthful, the structural balance supports a minimum eight-year aging window, with peak development expected between ten and twelve years as the wine evolves toward the early 2030s.
Serving & Pairing: Maintain storage at a consistent cool temperature below 13°C (55°F) prior to release. When ready to drink, pull glasses out fifteen minutes before pouring and aim for 16°C (61°F), or serve slightly cooler during warmer months. The wine’s acid structure and restrained alcohol weight pair cleanly with rich, slow-cooked proteins: wild boar or beef ragù served over pappardelle, braise-and-glazed lamb shoulder, roasted game birds, and sharp aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or local Tosana. For earlier consumption within three to four years, transition easily to mushroom risotto, charcuterie boards featuring cured salumi, or herb-crusted chicken cutlets.
