2023 Zind Humbrecht - Gewurztraminer Turckheim (750ml)
Gewurztraminer has long been an important grape variety in the village of Turckheim. Its position at the opening of the large Munster Valley guarantees a warm, dry climate, especially during the ripening season, factors which are critical for a grape that needs warmth and light to ripen properly. The gravelly soils of the Herrenweg in Turckheim allow for precocious ripening, which helps control the potential richness of the wines and gives Zind-Humbrecht the opportunity to harvest earlier, working against Gewurztraminer's natural tendency toward high alcohol and residual sweetness.
In 2023, the domaine did not produce its separate Roche Roulée cuvée, meaning all the Gewurztraminer vines located in the Herrenweg sector were unified into this single Turckheim bottling. The average vine age is 54 years, planted on gravelly silt soils. Thanks to the evolution of the regional climate, ripening now takes place during longer days and more intense light, advancing physiological maturity and paradoxically allowing the grapes to be harvested with less alcohol than in previous generations. This wine ferments quickly and finishes dry each year. The 2023 wines as a whole show beautiful aromatic expression and a ripe mouthfeel without excessive weight, with vigorous fermentations and harmoniously ripe acidities.
In the glass, the 2023 shows a bright, pale-yellow color. The nose is open and precise, offering aromas of spice, pepper, truffle, and cardamom with a slightly smoky character, moving decisively away from the heavy floral clichés often associated with the grape variety. On the palate, the wine is tight, dry, and smooth, with a surprising precision driven by a fine tannic influence that enhances the freshness of the vintage. The finish is long and spice-driven, with medium body and a welcome freshness. This is a wine firmly designed for the table.
It pairs well with grilled white meats, seafood in cream sauce, pickled herring, and expressive Asian and oriental cuisines with strong spice elements. The optimum drinking window is 2025 through 2033.
