The 2024 Alpha Estate Chardonnay Tramonto Single Block is a benchmark expression of Greek Chardonnay from one of the country's most technically accomplished wineries. Sourced from the "Tramonto" block on the Amyndeon plateau in northwestern Macedonia, the 1.99-hectare vineyard sits at 648 meters above sea level with a northwest exposure facing Mount Voras, planted in 2003 on sandy clay loamy soil over limestone conglomerates. This cool, high-altitude terroir gives the wine a precision and freshness rarely associated with barrel-fermented Chardonnay. Grapes are harvested by hand into small 15-kilogram picking baskets, then destemmed, optically sorted, and lightly crushed before undergoing cold skin contact under an inert atmosphere. Fermentation is driven by indigenous yeasts isolated from the specific block, taking place in fine-grain, white-toasted Bertrange and Jupille oak barriques, where the wine also rests on its fine lees for up to seven months with regular stirring.

In the glass, the wine pours a crystal-clear, bright yellow with slight greenish reflections. The nose is intense and expressive, offering pip fruits, citrus, and a gentle hint of melon, with oak playing a supporting role rather than dominating the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and creamy, with excellent freshness. Food pairings include white meats with creamy sauces, grilled or sauced fish, smoked fish, and aged cheeses.

17 Points
"This is about as aromatic as a barrel-fermented Chardonnay might be: fragrant with citrus – lemon and clementine – as well as mealy/creamy from the oak and lees. But even the aroma suggests freshness. In the mouth it is just as creamy with a touch of oak spice but with that lively citrus fruit holding the core of the wine like a backbone. Chewy texture with a hint of fruit sweetness on the finish (RS is only 1.4 g/l, apparently). Sophisticated, barrel-fermented Chardonnay with a long, almost chalky finish."
