2024 Enfield Wine Co. - Chardonnay Citrine (750ml)
Citrine takes its name from the "yellow quartz" gemstone, a nod to the wine's style: a balance of golden California sun with a gentle kiss of minerality. It was the first wine where founder John Lockwood blended fruit from multiple vineyards, and it remains a cornerstone of Enfield's California-wide approach, sourcing from small, trusted growers across the state's most storied heritage sites.
Citrine is crafted from four diverse vineyard sites, all planted on the same underlying quartzite material that gives the wine its name, spanning the length of California from Massa Estate in Carmel Valley and Watson Ranch in Napa to Brosseau Vineyard in the Gabilan Mountains and Bien Nacido in Santa Maria Valley. The grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed, barrel fermented with native yeast, and underwent full native malolactic fermentation before aging twelve months on lees, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The 2024 vintage is a bright and crisp expression, with a pop of tart green apple playing alongside sea salt, citrus, and honey. It's undeniably refreshing, calling to mind wines from Chablis. On the nose it's vibrant and intense yet balanced, showing briny citrus, orchard fruit, chamomile, and ginger, with distinct minerality on full display. Concentrated thanks to an average vine age of around 40 years, the wine balances juicy citrus and floral notes against electrifying acidity and a subtle creaminess.
This mineral-rich, juicy Chardonnay pairs perfectly with seafood and zesty salads.
