2024 Orealios Gaea - Robola of Cephalonia San Gerasimo (750ml)
Beat the Heat and Drink Like a Greek Islander
I've just returned from a family vacation to Greece, where I took some time to visit the co-op Orealios Gaea on the beautiful island of Kefalonia. Needless to say, I was blown away by the quality of the lineup here and the stunning value these wines present.
Made from the indigenous Robola grape and grown on impressive limestone terroir, this wine is a "mineral bomb" with excellent acidity and bright aromatics. I noticed the locals had a bottle on the table at every taverna, at every meal — and it's the perfect accompaniment to anything you might be eating in this heat. A nice change of pace from Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, and the usual suspects.
The San Gerasimo is the co-op's more serious bottling — named for Saint Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia, whose monastery sits right beside the winery in the mountainous Omala Valley. It's sourced from selected high-altitude, low-yield vineyards and rested three months on fine lees, giving it a touch more weight and complexity than your average Robola. Expect complex citrus (think grapefruit) with notes of honey, white flowers, and that signature crushed stone minerality, all carried by crisp, juicy acidity and a fresh finish.
Greek wine remains one of the most under-the-radar values in the world, and I think you'll be just as impressed as I was when you see how far your $19 goes!
