2025 Kobal - Furmint Podravje Sipon (750ml)
The 2025 Kobal Furmint (Šipon) is a dry white wine that offers a compelling introduction to one of Central Europe's most exciting wine regions. Kobal Wines is based in the Haloze sub-region of Štajerska (Lower Styria) in Slovenia's Podravje appellation, a area with nearly 2,000 years of continuous viticulture dating to the Roman era. The estate's 14 hectares of vines grow on steep, south-facing slopes as high as 400 meters above sea level, in soils dominated by mineral-rich marl (limestone), which imparts a characteristic minerality and cool-climate precision to the wines.
Šipon is the Slovenian name for Furmint, the ancient white grape best known internationally as the backbone of Hungary's prized Tokaji wines. In the bouquet, the varietal character of Furmint shines through in aromas of herbs, white flowers, and tropical fruits. On the palate, the wine is full and richly textured, where the fruit concentration is harmoniously balanced by lively acidity. Pleasant acidity and minerality are followed by a discreet, creamy finish typical of wines matured on lees. The 2024 vintage from this same estate showed a nose rich with tart green apple and a hint of white pepper, a profile consistent with the house style across recent vintages. Decanter has described the Kobal Šipon as offering fresh peach and floral aromas followed by a bright, fruity palate with crisp acidity and a hint of tropical fruit on the finish. Serve well-chilled as an aperitif or alongside light fish, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, young cheeses, or pasta in white wine sauce.
