2021 Correggia - Barbera d'Alba DOC Marun (750ml)

The Correggia family has farmed in the Roero since 1935, but it was Matteo Correggia who put the region on the international wine map after taking over from his father in the mid-1980s. His 1987 releases, including this very Marun bottling, were pivotal moments that proved Roero's Barbera and Nebbiolo could stand alongside the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Matteo died in a tragic accident at the estate in June 2001, leaving behind his wife, Ornella Costa, who took over the winery and has run it ever since, now working alongside their son Giovanni and longtime winemaker Luca Rostagno.

Marun takes its name from the estate's own vineyard on the left bank of the Tanaro river, a site regarded almost as a company cru for the consistent quality of its fruit. The vines sit at about 300 meters on light, sandy soils, harvested by hand in late September and fermented in stainless steel with roughly ten days of skin contact. The wine then matures for several months in a mix of large barrels and used barriques before further time resting in bottle.

The result is deep ruby-violet in color, with a nose of baking spice, vanilla, and ripe plum. The palate is full-bodied yet fresh, soft-textured, and lively. Pour it with salumi, grilled meats, or tomato-braised meatballs.
