Bierzo · Casar de Burbia · Godello · Valdepiñeiro · Fermentado en Barrica · 2023

Godello is having its moment, and this is one of Bierzo's finest expressions of it. The Valdepiñeiro parcel sits in the upper reaches of Valtuille de Arriba on soils of slate, quartz, and clay — among the most coveted vineyard sites in the appellation. The winemaking is Burgundian in spirit: fermentation begins in stainless steel before finishing in used 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels, where the wine rests for nearly a year on its lees with periodic stirring, then returns to tank for another seven months before bottling. The result is a wine of striking complexity for the category — vibrant citrus peel, fresh grapefruit, and white flowers on the nose, with intense minerality, precision, and real aging potential on the palate. Think white Burgundy energy from northwestern Spain. Drink 2025–2030.

93 Points
"The 2023 Godello Valdepiñeiro is a paraje-designated white fromBierzo. Fermented in oak, it opens with notes of bitter orange, grapefruit and a touch of flint, alongside hints of wood and cream. Intense and grippy with a talcum-like texture, this shows remarkable freshness and concentration for a white. The 2023 is a complex Godello with slightly phenolic notes and a long finish.
