2023 Martinelli - Zinfandel Russian River Valley Vigneto di Evo (750ml)
The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since the 1880s, when Giuseppe Martinelli and Luisa Vellutini eloped from Tuscany and planted Zinfandel on a steep hillside that became known as Jackass Hill. Six generations later, the family still farms those heritage vineyards.
Vigneto di Evo is named for Evo Martinelli, who was raised on Martinelli Road. This 100 percent Zinfandel is a barrel blend from the estate's Jackass, Vellutini, Lolita, and Giuseppe & Luisa vineyards. The last three were planted with cuttings from the 135-year-old Jackass vines, and their cool Russian River sites favor deeper, darker flavors over black pepper. Mild temperatures and plentiful water in 2023 let the clusters ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes were destemmed, cold soaked for five days, and fermented with native yeasts in French oak. The wine aged 10 months in French oak, 40 percent new.
Sweet raspberry, dark cherry, and molasses lead on the nose. The palate is mouthwatering, with red currant and pomegranate, subtle rhubarb, balanced tannins, and lively acidity. A smooth, lingering finish of vanilla cream completes the experience.
