2023 Ridge - Zinfandel Pagani Ranch Sonoma (750ml)
Ridge has made Zinfandel from the Pagani vineyard on the western side of Sonoma Valley since 1991, and the site itself dates back to the 1890s. Pagani Ranch has become one of Sonoma Valley's greatest treasures, made by several respected wineries including Bedrock Wine Co. and Carlisle in addition to Ridge. The majority of the vineyard was planted between ninety and one hundred twenty years ago, with portions replanted more recently, and it's meticulously tended by a quality-conscious family who has worked the land for four generations.
The 2023 vintage was a blend of 79% Zinfandel, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 9% Petite Sirah, and 2% Mataro, matured for 14 months in barrels of which just 3% were new air-dried American oak. The fruit came from a unique block that naturally traps morning fog and receives limited sun exposure, and in this cooler vintage that effect pushed even further, producing a slow-ripened, vibrant, bright fruit profile. It was the last fruit harvested in Sonoma for Ridge that year, picked between late October and early November.
Expect kaleidoscopic aromas of wild berry fruit, tobacco, aniseed, sage, and lavender. The full-bodied palate is equally generous, flooding the mouth with concentrated, complex flavors, structured by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity, finishing long and layered. The palate is softly textured, with a touch of nuttiness and a light sweetness from ripe berries and dried apricot, while the standout acidity suggests excellent aging potential.
This is a serious, age-worthy Zinfandel best paired with grilled meats, barbecue, or aged hard cheeses.
