El Tesoro, originally known as El Tesoro de Don Felipe, honors Don Felipe Camarena, who established La Alteña Distillery in the Los Altos region of Jalisco in 1937. The brand is now overseen by third generation Master Distiller Carlos Camarena, who describes his approach as one that respects family tradition while continuing to push the category forward, and it remains one of the few tequilas still crushed using an authentic stone tahona wheel.

Production begins with 100% estate grown Blue Weber agave that matures in the mineral rich highland soil for years before harvest. The agave is slow cooked in traditional stone ovens, crushed with the massive volcanic tahona, and fermented with its natural fibers in open wooden vats before double distillation in copper pot stills, using water drawn from a deep well on the property. This añejo then rests in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for two to three years, longer than many añejos, striking a balance between wood influence and agave character.

The nose offers cooked agave, caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak with a touch of baking spice. On the palate, rich agave sweetness meets honey, toffee, and cinnamon, rounded out by gentle oak. The finish runs long and warming, closing with soft pepper, dried fruit, and a whisper of green herbs.

"We slowly age our Añejo tequila in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for two to three years. This aging process imparts a stronger influence of oak but still allows the spirit to maintain the complexion of agave. You'll taste a hint of maple sweetness with notes of red fruit acidity, vanilla and caramel.
