Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Anejo 18 yr (Cosecha 2003) Tequila 750ml
Fuenteseca is the vintage-dated project of master distiller Enrique Fonseca, one of Mexico's most respected agave growers, produced at his El Pandillo distillery in the Jalisco highlands. The line is built entirely around the idea of terroir and extended aging, with each Cosecha, or harvest, tied to a specific year and left to mature far longer than most commercial tequilas, with expressions stretching from seven to twenty-one years old. Every release is certified additive free, reflecting Fonseca's focus on letting time and terroir do the work rather than any manipulation in the cellar.
This 2003 vintage began as a blend of roughly three-quarters column-still and one-quarter alembic-still tequila, distilled from mature highland agave. The spirit spent its first six years resting in 180-liter Canadian white oak casks previously used to age Canadian rye whiskey, maturing at high elevation in Atotonilco el Alto. It was then blended and re-barreled, with part returning to Canadian oak and the rest moving into 220-liter European oak casks that had previously held Bordeaux wine, continuing its evolution for another twelve years before bottling at eighteen years total.
The nose offers delicate pear and jasmine alongside dry, spiced wood, giving way to a rich, creamy palate of green apple and soft vanilla. Cedar and sandalwood notes build gradually, joined by a light acidity that keeps the spirit from feeling heavy despite its age. The finish is long, clean, and balanced, closing on a cool trail of minty green apple rather than the syrupy sweetness common in many extra añejos. This is a tequila built for slow, contemplative sipping rather than mixing.
