Glenfiddich 15 yr Unique Solera Reserve Whiskey 750ml
Glenfiddich has occupied its home in Dufftown since 1886, when William Grant established the distillery at the heart of Speyside. The company weathered Prohibition in the United States by continuing to expand production even as much of the industry contracted, and by the 1950s had built out its own on-site cooperage, one of the few still operating at a Scottish distillery today. The distinctive triangular bottle that carries Glenfiddich's whisky worldwide was introduced in 1956, and the distillery remains part of the family-owned William Grant & Sons.
The 15 Year Old matures across three cask types, European oak sherry butts, American bourbon barrels, and new oak, before being combined in a large Oregon pine Solera vat first filled in 1998. Modeled loosely on the fractional blending methods used in Spanish and Portuguese sherry production, the vat is never fully emptied, always retaining at least half of its previous contents as new whisky is added each year. That continuous marrying process is meant to build depth and consistency batch after batch. It is bottled at 40 percent ABV.
The nose brings sweet heather honey and vanilla fudge together with rich dark fruit. On the palate, sherry oak, marzipan, cinnamon, and ginger create a full-bodied character, and the finish runs long and smooth, with lingering sweetness and spice.
