Johnnie Walker traces its roots to 1820, when John Walker opened a grocer's shop in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and began selling whisky alongside his other goods. His son Alexander expanded the business into dedicated whisky blending and created the recipe that would become Black Label in 1865, registering it formally two years later. The blend went through several names, including Old Highland and Extra Special Old Highland, before settling on Black Label in 1909, the same year the brand introduced its now-famous Striding Man emblem. Owned today by Diageo, Johnnie Walker remains one of the best-selling Scotch whisky brands in the world.

Black Label carries a 12-year age statement, meaning every one of the roughly forty single malt and grain whiskies in the blend has matured for at least that long. Component whiskies are drawn from across Scotland's four whisky-producing regions, with Cardhu providing much of the malt character, Cameronbridge supplying the grain base, and a measure of peated Islay malt contributing smoke. After maturation, the whiskies are married together, then chill-filtered and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.

The nose carries a mix of dried fruit, vanilla, and gentle smoke, with a light touch of pepper underneath. On the palate, sweet vanilla and creamy toffee lead the way, balanced by dried fruit and a wave of smoky peat that builds toward the finish. That finish runs long and layered, closing on lingering smoke and a note of mixed citrus peel. It holds up well both neat and in a simple highball.
