Old Raj Red Label comes from William Cadenhead Ltd, established in 1842 and recognized as Scotland's oldest independent bottler. Best known for its whisky bottlings, Cadenhead's also produces this gin, whose name evokes the era of British colonial rule in India, the Raj. The recipe is a compounded gin, meaning the botanical flavor is prepared separately as an essence before being blended with a neutral Scottish grain spirit, a traditional method distinct from the direct distillation used by most modern gins.

The botanical essence is built primarily around juniper, joined by coriander seed, angelica root, lemon and orange peel, orris root, cassia bark, and almond powder, all steeped together in an alcohol and water mixture for thirty-six hours before being distilled in a small pot still. What sets Old Raj apart is the addition of saffron, the costly spice derived from the crocus flower, added personally by the company's chairman to keep the flavor and color consistent from batch to batch. This Red Label expression is bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume, notably higher than most standard gins, with a stronger Blue Label version also available at 55 percent.

The saffron gives the gin a distinctive pale golden hue you won't find in a typical clear spirit. On the nose, juniper leads, framed by lemon and orange peel. The palate carries a gentle spiciness from coriander, angelica, and cassia bark, with a soft nuttiness from the almond powder, closing on a long, lingering note of orris root.

"Cadenhead's Old Raj Gin is distinctive in that it contains a measure of saffron, the rare and costly spice derived from the crocus flower. In addition to a slightly spicy flavour, this also imparts a pale yellow colour to the Old Raj.

The addition of the saffron is undertaken personally by the company chairman, in order to ensure a consistency in flavour and colour each time Old Raj is bottled.

Old Raj is bottled at two strengths, 46% ABV (Red Label) and 55%ABV (Blue Label). This represents a further departure from standard gin bottling's which are generally bottled at 40% ABV or less. Old Raj is a quality-orientated product targeted at the knowledgeable spirits consumer.

The gin is produced by compounding a gin flavour (essence) with a neutral Scottish grain spirit.

The gin essence is prepared by steeping the botanicals, principally juniper, but also coriander seed, angelica root, lemon and orange peels, orris root, cassia bark and almond powder in an alcohol/water mixture for 36 hours and then distilling after a partial reflux in a small pot still.
