Port Askaig 17 Year Old is bottled by Elixir Distillers, an independent bottler rather than a distillery in its own right. The brand takes its name from the small village on Islay's northeast coast, long considered the island's historic gateway, and built its identity around undisclosed single malts sourced from Islay producers, with the exact distillery behind each release deliberately kept secret. Whisky enthusiasts have long speculated that Caol Ila, situated near the Port Askaig ferry crossing, supplies much of the liquid, though Elixir has never officially confirmed the source.

This particular expression matures for 17 years in American oak casks, largely ex-bourbon, before bottling as part of a limited annual release of around 9,000 bottles. It comes to bottle at a robust 50.5 percent ABV, uncolored and non-chill filtered, preserving the full character of the whisky. Port Askaig relaunched its core lineup in October 2023 with updated packaging, and the 17 Year Old sits alongside an 8 Year Old and a Cask Strength expression as one of the brand's three flagship releases.

On the nose, coastal brine and sea salt mingle with gentle wisps of smoke, orchard fruit, and a touch of creamy vanilla. The palate is balanced and smooth, layering honeyed malt and vanilla richness against a whisper of peat smoke, sea salt, and white pepper. The finish runs long, with soft smoke lingering alongside fruity apple and pear notes before fading into warm, smoky sweetness.
