1977 Fonseca Porto Vintage Port
Bottled after two years of cask maturation, the 1977 Fonseca Porto Vintage Port has spent nearly half a century refining its structure and intensity entirely within glass. Produced in one of Portugal’s most highly regarded harvest years, this 750ml bottle presents a mature, ready-to-drink fortified wine that balances historical weight with approachable complexity.
The nose concentrates on stewed blackberry, dried date, and toasted hazelnut, gradually yielding to secondary notes of saddle leather, damp slate, and sweet pipe tobacco. On the palate, residual sugar integrates smoothly with bright acidity, unlocking flavors of black cherry conserves, bitter cocoa, and star anise. Fine, well-aged tannins provide a velvet texture, while a long, dry finish leaves traces of crushed quartz and orange zest.
Serving & storage guidance: Vintage ports throw natural sediment as they age. Stand the bottle upright for 24 hours before pouring, then decant carefully through a sieve to preserve clarity. Allow 45 to 60 minutes of aeration before serving at a cool cellar temperature (16°C to 18°C / 61°F–64°F). Pairs cleanly with aged Manchego, pecan praline, or 70% cocoa dark chocolate. Once opened, recork tightly and refrigerate for up to five days.
