1982 Chateau L'Evangile Pomerol
One of the most celebrated Pomerols from one of Bordeaux's most legendary vintages — and a wine that belongs in the same conversation as Pétrus, Le Pin, and Vieux Château Certan from this extraordinary year. Pre-acquisition by the Rothschilds (who purchased the estate in 1990), this is old-school Pomerol at its most seductive. A blockbuster wine, decadently rich on the nose with caramelized fruit, plum, licorice, smoked meats, and toffee; opulent and full-bodied on the palate, caressing with layers of glycerin and fruit, tannins barely perceptible in this massive, gorgeous effort — the complexity of the nose alone is worth a special admission price. Compelling in every sense — cashmere-textured layers of chocolate-covered black cherries, plums, truffles, spice, and flowers coat the palate, lingering and expanding with a long, seamless finish. Now 43 years old and at or near its peak, though still capable of surprising. A once-in-a-lifetime bottle. Drink now–2032.
