The 1985 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines of immediate charm, balance, and harmony, and Mouton Rothschild's expression is a classic example, elegant rather than powerful, drinking beautifully at full maturity. Robert Parker described a rich, complex bouquet of oriental spices, toasty oak, herbs, and ripe fruit, moving into a rich, forward, and notably sexy palate, evolved and fully ready to drink. Expect fresh cassis, cherry, tobacco, cedar, and spice notes on a medium to full-bodied frame, soft, polished, and deceptively easy to drink at 40 years of age. A genuine First Growth from Baron Philippe de Rothschild's 63rd vintage at the helm of the estate, with legendary cellarmaster Raoul Blondin overseeing the cellar.

"The 1985 Mouton Rothschild has a strong peppermint/eucalyptusscented nose that, in this case, occludes the terroir and fruit profile. Perhaps this might have dissipated with longer aeration. The palate is sweeter than the accompanying 1985 Latour, plush and opulent in the style of the 1982, but without the same grandeur or complexity when
that vintage is "on." Maybe a little garish? Pleasurable in an Antipodean Cabernet kinda way. Tasted at the 1985 dinner at Noble Rot Mayfair.
